HOTELKEEPERS FINED.

SPIRITS BELOW THE STANDARD. At a silting of the Magistrate’s Court at Havelock on Wednesday, before Mr F. O’B. Loughuan, S.M., two district hotelkeepers were fined for soiling spirits below the standard prescribed by the regulations of the Sale of Food and Drugs Act. The charges arose as the result of surprise visits from a Government inspector, who took various samples from behind the bar.

For selling whisky which was 7 polecat. under the standard, Leslie Spradon latncll, licensee of the Linkwater Hotel, was fined £1 and ordered to pay 12s Ootirt costs and 10s fid analysis fee. Francis Galloway, licensee of the Commercial Hotel, Havelock, was charged with selling whisky which the analysis showed was 13 per cent, under the required standard, and brandy 9 per cent, below the test. He was fined 10s on each charge, with Court costs 7s on each .charge, and £1 Is analysis fee. The Magistrate, in inflicting the fines, said that these cases were brought forward to safeguard the public. The regulations stipulate that publicans cannot sell liquor under 7 o per cent, test without the nature of the contents being plainly stated on the bottle. Had the adulteration been any other but water he would have njadc the penalties much heavier. He was convinced that the present charges were more the result of ignorance than wilful intention, and he would therefore only inflict light fines in both cases.
