BE WM. HODGSON’S LETTER.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —In reference to Mr Wm. Hodgson’s letter I should like to say this; — In the 19th century English people waited in thousands round the house of Johanna Southcote, a woman of over sixty years of age, and consequently past child-bearing, for her to be delivered of the Messiah. That within the memory of people still living one “ fool Englishman ” wagered £SOO that he could prove that the world was flat. The trial was .made on a river, and the fool Englishman ” lost and paid. Over fifty tests were made at the North Carolina Experiment Station of the accuracy of the Babcock test as against the finest and most delicate graimetric analyses, and in five cases the Babcock showed the most fat; in nine the tests were equal; in the balance there was a fraction less, but not enough to make any appreciable difference in the value of the milk. Besides these tests there have been hundreds of thousands other, all going to prove the reliabilty of the Babcock. Now, sir, will you get one pint of milk from any farmer iu your district, and divide this into four equal portions. Keep one portion intact, and add to the first of the others one salt spoon full of water; to the second add two salt spoons of water; to the third add three salt spoons of water. Then let your local factory manager test the four samples in the presence of Mr Hodgson and his children and every one else interested. If these tests are not all different you can put the Dairyman Company down for a £5 subscription to any charity in the district. F. W. B. Gbeville Editor, New Zealand “ Dairyman.”
