A KIPLING STORY.
Rudyard Kipling was once the guest at a literary dinner, and amongst those present was a man who tried to make up for what little he knew of literature by a good deal of pretence. Trying to hold Kipling’s attention, he started a discussion concerning the spelling ,and pronunciation of the English language. ‘‘Have you ever noticed, Mr. Kipling,” he said, “ that in the entire English language there are only two words beginning with ‘su ’ that are pronounced as though beginning with ‘ sh ’ ? These two are sumach and sugar. Having made an exhaustive study of the subject, you may take it from me that this is so.” Bored though he was, Kipling’s politeness* did not desert him. He qnietly aslfcd, “ Are you sure 7”
