CARLUKE NEWS.

(Prom a Correspondent). ; Monday. : On Saturday last a large number of Havelock and local people gathered on the Carluke tennis ground to witness the .opening of the new court. The day was fine, but unfortunately very windy, which rather spoiled the outing. Mr Lambert, in addressing the spectators, dwelt with regret on the illness of the secretary (Mr Murray), which had greatly hindered operations m connection with the opening arrangements. In the absence of the president (Mr Foley), he (Mr Lambert) had been asked to open the new court. He stated that it gave him very great pleasure to do so, and though not a tennis player himself believed it to be a most interesting and scientific game. He was pleased to see so many Havelock visitors, and thanked them for their kindness ip undertaking the long journey to do honour to tlje new Club. He hoped it would be by no the last occasion on which the ’ Garlukites would have the pleasure of their company and that many .pleasant meetings would ensue. He then, amidst applause, declared the court open. During the afternoon tea and coffee, cakes, etc., were served on the ground, after which Mrs A. Scott. Havelock, made a brief speech, thanking the Club fgr tbekmdness shown them on their first visit ana wishing the Club every success.. About five o’clock the visitors left on the return jpunjey, and cheers, with musical honours, were given by both the visitors and visited In the evening a dance of a few hours’ duration was held, and was well attended, Mr Brady very kindly supplied the music. Very windy weather has been experienced here of late, with occasional thunderstorms. Much lightning of a dangerous character has been seen,, and only a few days ago two men were struck down, though only slightly injured, during one of these stoma. Owing to the very large number of children now in Carluke it has been decided to separate the Sunday School, which has hitherto been undenominational, into two distinct schools, one in connection with the Methodist Church and the other the Anglican Church. A large number attend each, thereby justifying the opinion that there is scope for the two schools..
