NYDIA BAY NOTES.

April 4. About twenty couples attended a dance in Mr Gould’s woolshed on Saturday night last, and on every hand it was voted a huge success. A world’s tour is being undertaken by two young men of this Bay (Messrs J. Buddo and J. Bolter). Both of these men have been working for the Marlborough Timber Company for the last three years, and are taking a well-earned holiday. They left here, with hearty good wishes from all, on Tuesday last, to catch the Sydney steamer on Friday. .We must congratulate the Messrs Craig on their up-to-date sawmill in the Opouri. The daily output is about 24,000 feet of sawn timber, and with an extra log-hauler and the new addition which the proprietors are erecting, the output will be materially increased. Besides other machinery, a planing machine is being installed, and timber will be dressed in the mill. This will necessitate more labour, and with about fifteen years’ cutting yet in their bush there is plenty of work for sawmill labourers. The mill employs approximately seventy, men—in the bush, mill, and on the trams.

Pig and deer are abundant in the valley, and the roar of the stag is heard resounding through the hills. Good sport will be obtained when the shooting season opens, as pigeon also are very plentiful. The visit of the Havelock Brass Band is eagerly looked forward to, and the members can be sure of a good time when they do come. Besides a good outing, the Band will liven up the Bay and bring the residents closer together. The Government inspector of sawmills is visiting the mills of the district this month, as is also the inspector of boilers. Mr Bert. Dawson has secured the contract for the laying-down of the mill tram, taking the work over on Monday last. This is a big contract, as a good many miles of tram will have to be laid before the big timber can be secured from the bush.

[This communication has been considerably delayed vn route from Nydia Bay— Ed. P.G.]. For a side-wager two well-known axemen, White and Prentice, of the Opouri Valley, tried conclusions in an underhand chop on Saturday last. Prentice got the better start, and, chopping in fine style, won easily in imin ssec White getting •' wooded ” when half-way through his block, thereby losing the good chance be had.
