BAZAAR AT CANVASTOWN.

As was anticipated would be the case, the sale of work at Canvastown on Saturday was the most successful ever held there, the receipts totalling £6O. The expenses are less than £B, so a very handsome profit has been added to the Church Building Fund. The Hall was very prettily decorated with lycopodium, ferns, etc., and the i stalls were so arranged as to create quite a picturesque effect. There were quite a number of visitors from Havelock, which showed that the substantial support accorded the Havelock annual sale by Canvastown ladies is properly recognised. The bazaar was officially opened by Rev. A. W. Btaco, who referred in very complimentary terms to the splendid organising work of the Ladies' Guild at Canvastown. He regretted the absence, through illness in her family, of Mrs D. Young, who had always been prominent in similar gatherings in past years. At Mr Stace's call hearty applause was given in recognition of the efforts of those responsible for the fine exhibition of goods. There was no fruit on the alalia, the drought, strong winds, and the lateness of the season accounting for this; but there was a fine show of vegetables, including some mammoth pumpkins from Mr Rutland's farm. It would not be safe for a mere man to dilate upon the beautiful creations displayed upon the drapery and fancy stall, but that they were of good quality and reasonable in price was evident by the way they were purchased by the bargain hunters. Those in charge of stalls were : Fancy, Mrs H. Hill; drapery, Mrs John Hughes, Mrs W. Lodge; produce, Mrs Thorpe, Miss Jones; lollies and oake-guessing, Miss Young and Miss McAllister; fish-pond, Miss Alquist; tea-room, Mrs W. Mrs Wadey, and Mrs B. Lawson; shooting competitions, Mr James Hughes, Jun.; The nail-driving competitions were in charge of Messrs B. Lawson and N. Jones. The guessing competitions were won by the following: -Cake (presented by Mrs W. Dalton), Mrs T. D. Taylor; tin of lollies, Sholfco Gardiner; handsome doll, Mrs T. Forrest. The supper was voted the best ever given in Canvastown, the quality and quantity of the good things being wonderful. The takings at the various stalls were as follow : £ s d Drapery 18 10 6 Produce ... ••• 1 10 3 Fishpond 13 0 0 Fancy 4 18 3 Lollies 3 9 9 Cake-guessing ... ...8 0 0 DoH-gueasing ... ... 010 6 D00r... 7 17 9 Shooting and nail-driving... 4 18 2 Collected during year ...400 v £56 10 2 Last year's takings at the sale amounted to £B9 and the year's collection to £l2, making a total of £51103. Several small amounts have yet to come in, and it is anticipated that the gross receipts will be £6O. Mr McGuire very kindly gave the use of the hall without charge, a concession that was much appreciated.
