In the coke ovens and blast furnaces of England, Germany, and the United States, the gases that go to waste represent at i least power yearly. It has been calculated that out of the population of the globe, about' 1,500,000,000 in all, there arc never much fewer than 3,500,000 afloat on seas or rivers. It is said that, by a mistake, a Bank of England note for one penny got into circulation in the year 1828, and that it was finally redeemed for five pounds.
