THIRTY-FIVE DEATHS; New York, July 24.

A train with eight hundred excursionists on the Pere Parqumte railway, near Salem, Michigan, dashed into a freight train coming from the opposite direction. Six out of eleven cars were destroyed, and thirty-five persons were killed, while scores were injured, many critically. ,About 150 children, were among the excursionists, but only a few were severely hurt. The victims were chiefly men.

The San Pedro struck her port bow, tearing an immense hole in the Columbia, whose passengers hurried on deck, where a wild panic ensued, The Columbia sank in five minutes. A life raft was launched and saved a few, and eight were saved by clinging to the San Pedro. Lloyd’s agent stales that 100 were drowned and that 200 were saved by a passing steamer. Auckland, July 24, The scow Surprise is a total wreck at Ohui, ,

The Captain, Mate, and two seamen are supposed to have been drowned. A fifth man got ashore. He is badly knocked about, but is expected to recover. A telegram from Tairua statss that a messenger from Ohui has just ridden over and reported that the scow went ashore on the rocks about a mile from the north end of Ohui beach, and is a total wreck. The man who got ashore found his way to Ohui, where he is being well looked after by Mr James McGregor. He is badly knocked about, and rambles a little in his talk, but is expected to be well in a day or two, His name is Harry Jackson, and from what can be gathered of his account the scow dragged her anchor right from Slipper Island' and went ashore on the coast early on Sunday morning. On the '2Bth of last month the members of the crew of the Surprise were as follow : —J. G, Jalliere (skipper), who was taken on in place ol R. W. Glifle, who was sick when the vessel was last here; H. W. Jackson, aged 20, of Norfolk Island; A. Stewart, aged 19; E, Johansen, aged 19; W. Kelly, aged 17.

The last two members of the crew were signed on when the vessel was here last month, and the above list comprised the crew at the time she left this port.
