PERSONAL.
Sir Joseph Ward and Lady Ward left England on Friday, on their return to New Zealand. A large party of ex-colonials farewelled them.
In the Supreme Court at Wellington on the Bth insfc., on the application of Mr J. P. Hayes, letters of administration of the effects of the late W. P. Gould, of Murchison, were granted by his Honour Mr Justice Cooper to Mr John Gould (Nydia Bay), the father of the deceased.
Mr W. R. Cook, of Dunedin, has been appointed to the headmastership of the Renwick School. He is 29 years of age, single, holds a D.-2 certificate, and is at present Second Assistant Teacher at the North-east Valley School, Dunedin. He has a good athletic record, and has taught his former pupils swimmiug, football, cricket, physical drill, etc. Among the cases to be tried at the civil sittings of the Wellington Supreme Court, which commenced yesterday, is one in which one Michael Bee Demuth claims £4OO damages from St. George A. Dowsing (late of Havelock) for slander and libel. Notwithstanding that nearly 300 people took part in a concerted search, on Sunday, for the man Preston, whe has been missing from his home in Blenheim since 10th inst., no signs of him were found. As n& trace can be found of Preston's bicycle or gun the Police suggest that this indicates that Preston left the place with the intention of concealing his departure.
