HIS WIFE’S GIFT TO BRIDE.
Peter Be Peystei, smoking a cigarette, studied his trim evening clothes before an immense mirror.
“I am ready dear.” Mrs. I)e Peystor, in a shimmering pale gown, swept into the room. ‘‘Come dear,” she said, “I’m ready.” Peter De Peyster put out his cigarette. ‘‘How well you look,” he began. ‘‘That gown” ‘‘l thought you’d like it.” “Is it new ?” ‘‘Quite new.” ‘‘Where did you get the money for it ? I hope you didn’t have it charged. My account with” “I earned the gown,” said Mrs. De Peyster. ‘‘l hasn’t cost yoni one penny, my dear Peter.”
‘T am glad,” sighed Mr. De Peyster. ‘‘The fact is, you know all this bridge” “I know dear,” said Mrs. De Peyster. ‘‘And shall I tell you how I earned the gown ?” ‘‘Yes, do,” said he. ‘‘You know that hundred dollars you gave me to buy a wedding present for Jessie Craig with'?” ‘‘Yes.”
” And you know, up in the attic, the trunkful of old presents that were sent back to you by that girl to whom you were formerly engaged?’ “Well,” said Mrs. De Peyster, smiling, ‘T took a silver hand mirror out of the trunk, polished it up and sent it to Miss Craig, and the money for her present, feeling I had earned it by my cleverness, I spent upon this handsome gown. What is the result ? The result is that we are pleased all around.”
But Mr. De Peyster did not look exactly pleased. He smoothed nervously his sleek and shining hair. He gave a little embarrassed laugh. “You are pleased,” he said, “and I am pleased. About Miss Craig, though—l’m afraid she isn’t pleased.’ “Why not?” asked Mrs. De Peyster. ‘Tt’s a beautiful hand mirror.” “I know,” agreed her husband, ‘but you see she is the girl who sent it back to me.”
