BY THE SEA.
In the wild tumult of your vague unrest, In the mad ferment of your ceaseless roar. Splashing in foam and splintering every crest. With heedless might upon the silent shore, Like wasted thought of unrecorded lore ; Tell me the secrets harbouring in your breast, The tragedy and horrors that infest Your darksome depths—a mystery evermore !, Your voice is hushed, the maddening winds are still, The waves are lapped with -music’s softer spell. Flashing like iridescent hopes that thrill, Which passing storm and stress can never quell.; March on, resistless waves, that hail the light * And murmur sweetness to the restful night ! Isidore G. Ascher*
