The unemployed relief works have now been in operation nine weeks, and over £2,300 has been paid in wages. In the first week 79 men were employed, and over £37 paid in wages. In the ninth week 403 were employed, and £369 14/8 paid in wages. The actual number of applicants for work is 950.

The Relief Work Committee met to-day, when it was resolved that the scale of pay for men employed on the work should be 3/4 and 5/- per day, and that married men should in every case have preference of employment. About 150 men have already obtained orders for work. ROPE MAKING. Auckland, August 14. Twenty-five men have received notice of dismissal. SHOCKING CRUELTY. Napier, August 14, A case of extraordinary cruelty to a child is reported from Ormondville. A girl of 13 was tied to a bed-post naked, and flogged with a lash until blood flew all round. She e scaped and informed the police, her condition bearing out her statement, and proceedings have been taken against her assailant, who is either her father or guardian.
