Murder at Masterton.
Masterton, June 12.
The inquest on the body of Arthur Herbert, the victim of Thursday’s tragedy, was held before Mr Hutchison, Coroner, yesterday. The evidence adduced merely confirmed the information already published ; and the jury, after a few moment’s retirement, returned a verdict of Wilful Murder against Andrew J. Somerville.
Somerville was charged with the murder in the Magistrate’s Court this morning, before Mr Hutchison S.M., and Mr W. H. Beetham, J.P.
The prisoner walked calmly into the dock, folded his arms, and displayed an indifference to the proceedings which, under the circumstances, is little short of astounding. When the principal witness (Mr A. M'Hutcheon) entered the box prisoner nodded and smiled.
Mr Pownal appeared for the accused.
Somerville was committed for trial at the next criminal sittings of the Supreme Court in Wellington. He reserved his defence.
Prisoner converses freely with the police, and relishes his meals, sleeps soundly, and generally conducts himself as though he either did not realise his position or was quite indifferent as to his fate.
