Our contemporary, the Evening Post, in a local published in that paper says, “ The Pelorus Guardian is very angry with ns for expressing our suspicions of jobbery and log-rolling in connection with the Rai Valley Tramway scheme, while communications addressed to us by practical and reliable men in that district show the facts to be even worse than we supposed.” Now, we can assure that editor he is, as usual, labouring under about twenty ton weight of delusion when imagining that anything he can write or state about us produces any other feeling in our minds beyond pity for his employers, who, having built up a once reliable public journal, are now daily losing their prestige through the thoughtless prejudiced writings and untruthful statements of one so aptly described by Shakespeare as “Once a man, twice a child,” or a young man in his dotage. Of course we can quite understand this Alpha and Omega, or would be great I Am, becoming rabid at the slightest contradiction, especially when his saintly character stands convicted out of his own pigeon holes, as it was recently when we republished and compared his own contradictory leaders over that poor unfortunate man Chemis, and he could offer no defence. Now, we challenge and defy him to publish the communications he states were received by him from practical and reliable men in this district that will bear out the base insinuations contained in the paragraph we are referring to, thus for once establish a claim to a little truthfulness. But we know he cannot, and so he has forfeited any claim he may have had to the cognomen of “ (Superior person,” and we now re-christen him by a soubriquet he has fairly earned—" The Squid.” What is that ? we hear our readers asking. Well, it is a species of cuttle-fish or molluscous animal that attacks others, then, when pursued, is capable of discharging a black inky fluid, which darkens the water around and enables it to escape, or, as Darwin says, it has a very extraordinary chameleon-like power of changing its colour ,
