[By Boiloveb.] Some excitement, coupled 'with amusement, was caused in town on Tuesday evening last after a friendly game of quoits bad been played in the Masonic Hotel paddock. Six gentlemen decided to try conclusions for a sprint of 150 yards, the starting point being from a given place ait toe northern end of the and the winning post the Masonic Hotel, where a silk line was stretched across the road. The odds were 2 to 1 on Whitwell, 4 to 1 Cheeseraan, 7 to 1 Elliott, 8 to 1 Tapp, 10 to 1 Mclsaac, 20 to 1 Maule ; totalisafcor £ll 15s 6d. The prize for the winner was well contested, and resulted as follows : "Whitwell scratch, Oheeseman 4yds, Elliott 6yds, Tapp 6yds, Mclsaac 7yds, Maule 12yds. Mr Carter was appointed handicapper and starter, and after having got his men well in position gave the signal and a splendid start was effected, all leaving the ground as one man, the relative positions were maintained at a roaring pace until nearing Brownlee & Co.’s Store, when changes took place, Mclsaac forging ahead, with Tapp in close attendance, and Whitwell struggling gamely for second honour. A splendid finish was obtained by Mclsaac breasting the ribbon first Tapp 2 feet away, and Whitwell about a nose behind him, the rest arriving home about the time the lubrication Was being supplied at the counter, where the stakes were paid over and a merry half-hour indulged m which broke the monotony of the dull times. A large concourse of people turned out to witness the event, which was done |n <juick tiipe—7 seconds.
