A Sad Fatality.

Kaikoura, February 5. Intelligence has just reached us of a sad drowning accident this morning in Hapuka river, about seven miles from here. Mr Beattie of the firm of Black, Beattie & Co., of Christchurch, and his wife, who bad driven up from Christchurch on a holiday trip, were returning from the Clarence bridge this morning in their conveyance with two horses, when, in attempting to cross the river, which was swollen by last night's heavy rain, the vehicle capsized. Mr Beattie struggled ashore but his wife and the horses, etc., were washed out to sea, which is about 200 yards from the ford. The messenger from the scene of the accident says the body of the unfortunate lady, and the horses and trap may be plainly seen now and then on the crests of the heavy.rollers which are tumbling on the shore, but gradually going seawards. Later, The body was rescued by the fishermen's boat at 8 o'clock.
