Yesterday afternoon, two gentlemen, who recently arrived in Gisborne, went out for a ride in the country with a very valuable dog. After riding some distance it was discovered that tlie “poor doggie” was intents. The faithful dog, who had followed its owner a short distance on his journey, had mysteriously disappeared. His master returned and made all the requisite enquiries, but be could gain no information as to its whereabouts. The gentleman then considered what was best to be done, and on the advice of a friend he proceeded to the eastle of Sergeant Donelly, and interviewed Sergeant Bullen, who resides in close proximity. After explaining the state of affairs to the gallant Sergeant, that officer proceeded to make enquiries, and in a very short space of time, in fact almost before you could pronounce the mystic word “presto” the dog appeared at the present abode of its owner, where the sagacious creature received a most hearty welcome. Bravo Sergeant!

Messrs Win. Ratcliffe and Co , will sell by public auction on Thursday next, at 2 o’clock in the afternoon, some splendid steers at their fortnightly sale at the Bridge Hotel, Matawhere.

We would call attention to the fact that, unless the calls at present due on the South Pacific Petroleum Company’s shares are paid up on or before the 10th of January (tomorrow) all those shares will be absolutely forfeited. We would thefore recommend all those who have not interviewed the secretary with their cheque, or the cash, to do so with as little delay as possible.

From our advertising columns it would appear that a sheep dog has been found, and it-not claimed within ten days will be sold to defray expenses. An auction sale was held yesterday by Messrs Carlaw Smith and Co., at the residence of Mr W. Clarke, of all iiis furniture and effects, previous to his departure from Gisbo ne. There was a very fair attendance, and although the bidding was not very animated, the prices realised were in the main good.
