The English Elections.
(OWN CORRESPONDENT.) London, November 25. Liberal members have been returned unopposed for Merthyr-Tvdvil, Carlisle, and Wolverhampton South. The late members of Parliament for the Universities of Oxford, Cambridge, and London have all been re-elected unopposed. Later returns announce that Lord Randolph Churchill has been defeated for Birmingham, the Liberal candidate securing the seat by a majority of 773 votes. Mr Joseph Chamberlain was elected by a large majority. The Conservatives have gained twelve seats from the Liberals, and the latter have taken one seat from the Conservatives. The elections are proceeding quietly. The Hon. Colonel Stanley, Secretary of State for the Colonies, has been returned unopposed. Mr J. E. Gorst has been re-elected for Chatham. Mr G. Otto Trevelyn and Mr Campbell-Bannerman were returned unopposed, while Sir A. N. Hayterand Mr J. Passmore Edwards have been defeated for Bath and Salisbury respectively. The Right Hon. A. W. Peel, Speaker, has been elected. In Ireland two Parnellite candidates have been returned. The nomination of Miss Helen Taylor has been refused. The Hon. W. H. Smith, Secretary for War, has been returned by a majority of over 3,000. The Tory vote has been relatively strong in many of the other contests, and appears to be increasing. The Radicals have carried the day at Birmingham. The net returns at present give the Tories a majority of eleven. Nov. 26. Lord Randolph Churchill, who was defeated at Birmingham, has been returned by a large majority for Paddington. Sir Charles Dilke has been elected by a narrow majority for Chelsea.
