“THE GREATEST WORK ON THE EAST COAST.”
More “Moral Fibre ” Wanted. On Thursday morning an attempt was made to open the swing of the Turan ganui Bridge in order to allow the steam tender Snark to pass down th e river, but no sooner had the revolving part moved a little when the turning gear carried away, and the bridge became jambed. A large crowd of spectators soon congregated and amongst them several Councillors, one of whom remarked that the bridge was “ all right but for the swing,” which caused all the trouble. It is quite evident that the swing at least is totally unfit to be opened, and if great care is not taken, will cause some serious accident and loss p of life by toppling into the river and crushing the men employed beneath. The swing was after much labor got back into its place, and the Snark had to remain until low water when she managed to get under the briege.
