BOROUGH COUNCIL.

At the extraordinary meeting of the above council last night, there was a a full attendanoe.

The committee appointed to consider the question as to the desirability of of permitting the Town Clerk to also hold the Secretaryship of the Harbor Board recommended that the Town Clerk perform both duties atan advanced salary of £5O a year, the Harbor Board to pay £lO additional rent and £2O a year towards the general office expenses. A long and animated discussion ensued upon the following motion by his Worship the Mayor and seconded by Cr Kenny : “ That the Council has no objection to the Town Clerks service being continued so long as all duties required by the Council to be exercised t.y its Clerk are fully performed, and adopts the report submitted by the committee ; the Harbor Board to pay an increase of /"io per annum rent, and to contribute £2O per annum towards the ge eral expenses of the Borough Council, each body to supply its own stationery in future.” On the motion being put there were —For : C. A. DeLatour, S. M. Wilson, H. E. Kenny, H. Lewis, J. Townley, A. Graham, Against: E. P. Joyce, J. Trimmer, 0. Smith.

Cr Joyce then moved, and Cr Smith seconded : “ That the services of the Town Clerk being fully occupied by the Council, and necessitating an assistant, it is in the opinion of this Council, not judicious for him to undertake the secretaryship of the Harbor Board.” After much wrangling between the chair and the mover, the motion was negatived.
