SPORTING.
The result of the Melbourne Cup was wired to Wellington in about two minutes actual time. Mr W. Bailey’s well-known racehorses, Gipsy and Herculaneum arrived from Napier by the s.s. Suva yesterday morning, the former having won the Maiden Plate, and the latter running a good second in the Petane Handicap. It is rumored that a match has been arranged, to be run on Mr E. Beresford’s racecourse, Makaraka, between Mr J. Harding’s Penguin and Mr George Burnand’s Black Gipsy for A lO a-side, distance two miles, Penguin allowing the mare 71bs.
Mr John Field has sustained a serious loss in the death of his brood mare Queen Mary, the dam of Sheet Anchor, Anchorite and Mozart. She was only two years old when she went to the stud, her first foal being Sheet Anchor, whom she produced to St. Albans in 1878. In 1879 she had Claudine to the same horse, and 1880 Anchorite, also to St. Albans. She was then sent to Napoleon, and Mozart was the result. Queen Mary was by Castle Hill from Black Bess, who was closely related to the dam of Malua. —N. Z. Referee. The second day’s racing in connection with the C.J.C. Metropolitan Meeting took place on Thursday. The attendance was good, but the weather, after 3 o’clock, was very wet. The Hurdles was won by Kingask, with Director and Ravenswood in the order named. The only other events of importance were the Canterbury Derby and Stewards’ Stakes. In the former Stoneyhurst succeeded in catching the judge’s eye first, ii.v. .ug i'usiiade and Hermitage for his immediate attendants. Turquise appropriated the Stewards’ Stakes, with Lochiel and Talebearer in the order named. Over Lio,ooo passed through the totalisator during the day.
