COOK COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the above Council took place on Thursday afternoon. Present : Crs Ferris (in the chair) Smith, Grey, Dobbie, Gannon, Trimmer, and Chambers. The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed, the outgoing correspondence was disposed of. Incoming Correspondence. From Mr Barnard stating that plans of the Wairoa Road,,Hangaroa District, had been approved and forwarded. From Messrs A. Graham and the Ven. Archdeacon Williams, acknowledging appointment to High Schoo! Board. From the Harbor Board thanking the Council for the permission to lay a tram along the Whataupoko. From H. J. Finn as solicitor for Peti Aata, claiming £l2, the value of a horse which had been killed through some timber being left on the road the other side of the Arai Bridge. Ihe Engineer had not the slightest idea where it could be. Cr Chambers had once fell off his horse and broke his head. He might as well have sued the Council for that. He moved “ That the letter be not entertained." Cr Grey seconded.—Carried. From Mr Wilson of Tologa, asking permission to place a sledge house on the road opposite the Sea View Hotel, application granted, providing no objection be made by residents. A Tologa Bay Pound. From W. F. Hale, of Tologa, setting forth the great need for a public pound, and the great loss occasioned thereby to himself and others. Cr Chambers thought that Mr Hale should erect a private one, and impound Himself. He could recover his mileage lee. Cr Ferris said the matter had been fully discussed before the old Council, and refused on the grounds of the otner settlers at Tologa putting m a counter petition Cr Gannon had little doubt but what the erection of a pound at 1 ologa wou.d go a long way to relieve the general monotony of tiie place (laughter), but if tire majority of the people were opposed to it, he did not see why the Council should force one upon them He would propose that the letter be referred to the Road Board. Carried. Badgers Statues.

From Mr Badger offering balance of statutes at reduced rates. Cr Gannon said the statutes had been found so incomplete that lawyers had refused to pay for them, and an action was now pending about them. The offer was declined. Payments. The following payments were then passed r

Tologa Bay Ferry. On the application of Mr Lee it was resolved to transfer the interest of applicant in the Tologa Ferry to Mr Kirk.

The Waimata Ridino, Cr Gannon asked whether any reply had been received from the Borough Council re the Waimata boundary over the river.

Cr Ferris thought steps should be taken to obtain some alteration of this boundary of two chains from the river. It might require an order in Council, or something of that sort, but it ought to be done. Why the Borough Council should receive the rates he did not know, as they never spent a penny there, ihe County and Road Board were the only ones who spent money there, and they should' certainly have the rating. Cr Gannon agreed with this. The centre of the river ought to be the boundary, and not two chains from the bank. Here were sections with half in the County and half in the Borough, and the occupiers had to pay no less than three rates—one to the County, one to the Borough, and one to the Road Board. I bis was, to say the least of it, a very inconvenient state, of things. He would suggest that the clerk write letter to the proper authorities inquire what steps the Council were TO take to remedy such a state of affairs, i he question would be one of considerable importance if the /To,ooo loan was raised.

Cr Grey imagined that the boundary had been illegally defined. The clerk also thought that the boundary had been defined contra to the loan.

On the suggestion of Cr Ferris it was decided that thecierk write the Borough Council about the question, and that the matter be adjourned till next meeting.

The Tologa Telegraph. In answer to Cr Gannon the Engineer said Mr Bold had been here and inspected the rails, and was satisfied with them, although he had declined to give his own opinion upon them. He had stated that discarded or crooked rails would not do. They would all have to be undamaged, and put on the wharf. Mr Bo d had stated that it was just a toss up as to whether they got the money.

Cr Gannon did not see why they could not use 3! niles of the best of the rails. He thought the Council should not lose the opportunity of getting this /TOOO, and should wire to Mr Bold ancT Lemon stating that we were willing to give the best of the rails. The Government would only be glad of any excuse to get out of the matter, but the Council should let them see that they were determined to push the matter. It should also be remembered that Tologa had as much right to the rails as any other riding—especially after they had been used for the benefit of the other ridings so long. There would still be sufficient rails left for obtaining metal from Barker's quarry. 1 hey would not want nine or ten miles for that.

Cr Gray found that the position of affairs had changed since the last discussion, as the Council had found it could now get stone much nearer town. He agreed that they should offer the Government the best rails. Cr Ferris was inclined to support the motion, as it would doubtless tend to allay a good deal of ill-feeling on the Coast. The motion was then unanimously agreed to. Patutahi Quarry. It was agreed that the contractor, Malone, be allowed the use of some rails, providing he agreed to pay for any damage when done with. Miscellaneous Business. On the motion of Cr Gray it was resolved to notify Mr Malone to fill in a hole alongside the public road at VI akaraka. At the request of the Engineer it was agreed to increase Mr Moore’s ply from 8s to ios per day. The Engineer was authorised to call for and accept tenders for work up The Coast, at Waipiro and Tuparoa; also to spend /To or /T 2 on repairs to thew Tologa Ferry approach. W In answer to an application from the Ormond Road Board it was decided to defer the clearing out of the Mahunga Creek for a month or so. The Council then rose.
