We await with no small amount of interest the result of the interview which is to take place between the Borough Council Committee and the County Council relative to the Matawhero gravel question, and although up to the present time the latter body has persistently ignored its obligations of public duty in this matter, yet we cannot possibly see how it can, with any show of reason, refuse to act in concert with the spirit of the motion whereby a peaceful and just solution to the difficulty can be arrived at without any further appeal to that irritable local scourge—the law. The County Council is simply asked to join with the Borough Council in requesting the Government to vest all rights in the bed of the Waipoa River in the County Council for the use of the public, and as conservators of the public interests they cannot consistently refuse to co-operate in the manner indicated, The proposed course cannot fail to recommend itself to any person outside the coterie which invariably, finds its exponent in that common enemy to the public liberties and rights whose columns are ever devoted to the slandering of truth and honesty. Should the laudable efforts of the committee fail, further energetic efforts will at once be made to counteract the effect of the questionable decision given in our local law mill —a decision which, whatever may be the final result of the question, will ever be remembered as an instance where justice not alone removed the bandage, but also put on green spectacles.
