R.M. COURT, GISBORNE.
(Before Jas. Booth, Esq., R.M.) Lunacy. Morne Adams Fitzclarence, clerlu was brought up under remand, charged with having, on the Ist day of September, stolen two gold engagement rings from the shop of Mr William Good, Jeweller. W. Good deposed to the prisoner, having called at his shop upon the day named, and asked to look at some rings. He did not buy any, but asked for one of witnesses’ business cards. Witness left about 40 rings on the counter and went to get a card at the other end of the shop. On receiving the card the prisoner left, and immediately after witness missed twp rings. went to Madame DeCosta’s hotel, and from there went to the Argyll Hotel where he saw the prisoner. He accused the prisoner of having stolen the rings. The prisoner at first denied having taken them, but at last acknowledged it, and asked to be allowed four days to return them. He then gave the prisoner into custody. Mr DeLautour asked that the Court would give the prisoner some opportunity for further usefulness, by dealing with the matter summarily. He was a young man who had drifted into this matter, but who, up the present, as far as the police was concerned, had a clean sheet.
Ihe Court having told the prisoner that he had been guilty of a most impudent robbery, and it was no excuse to say that he was hard up. The sentence was four months hard labor.
The rings were ordered to be given up to Mr Good.
