CARL Pl MEWS. (own correspondent.) London, Sept. u. Lord Carrington was entertained at a farewell banquet last evening at the Beaconsfield Club. The Agents-Gen-eral for the various colonies were among the guests. Lord Carrington, in reply to the toast of the evening, referred to the colonies, and eulogised their recent offers of aid to the British Government. He said the lion’s cubs bad proved themselves worthy offspring of the mother country. Lord Roseberry expatiated upon the desirability and advantages of federation. He said it was a -question which showed Lord Carrington’s tack and discretion. The recent difficulty over the Caroline Islands showed the enormous importance the Great Powers attached to colonial possessions, and he considered that colonial statesmen ought to watch events closely, because earth hunger was very dominant nowamongst nations. Sir Saul Samuel replied to Lord Roseberry’s remarks on federation, and in responding to the toast of the AgentsGeneral, welcomed Lord Carrington as the new Governor of New South Wales.
