PARLIAMENTARY.
(own correspondent.) Wellington, Monday. ‘ In the Council on Friday the CdWiial Secretary promised to take the opinion of the law officers as to whether a Resident Magistrate had legal authority to commit any individual to a Lunatic Asylum without a preliminary enquiry. The Employment of Females Bill passed through committee. The Distress Bill was read a third -a time and passed. In the House on Friday Mr Samuel withdrew his motion for the appointment of a committee re the Wellington Hospital, the Premier having promised to appoint a commission to enquire into the matter. Captain Russell moved that the committee’s report on the Napier Gas Company’s Bill be not agreed to, but a fresh committee be appointed. The motion was carried by 41 to 20. I Mr Richardson stated that he hoped to be able to deliver his Public Works Statement on Tuesday evening. On the motion of Mr Stout it was ordered that the House meet on Monday evenings for Government business. The remainder of the sitting was occupied with the Land Bill, which passed through committee, was read a third time and passed. The House rose at 3 a.m. w
