CABLE NEWS. (OWN CORRESPONDENT.) London, August 20. Reports from the South of Europe show that the cholera epidemic is subsiding in a degree, the number of deaths being on the decrease. The Guards, which for some time past has been stationed at Limasol (Cyprus), have been ordered home. August 21. Recent unfavorable accounts of the English hop crop are borne out by later advices, and the forthcoming yield is expected to be short in quantity, and extremely inferior in quality. August 22. The steamship John Elder, en route for Australia, has been detained at Port Said, owing to a slight accident to her -machinery. She is expected to resume her voyage in about five days. The bulk cf frozen meat, ex ship Mataura from Napier, has been examined and found in good condition. The frozen mutton, ex lonic and Aorangi, is selling at 4-J per lb. The Liberal and Tory press ‘commenting on the receut modifications by Russia of her proposal regarding the occupation of Zulfikar pass, generally express the distrust of them. The action of Germany in regard to the Caroline Islands has caused great excitement in this city, and an antiGerman feeling is rapidly growing into existence. The diplomatic tension between the two countries is so great at present, that an open rupture is menaced. New York, August 22. The St. Petersburg correspondent of the New York Herald confirms the statement that Russia has waived her claims to the Zulfikar Pass.
