TURANGANUI LIBRARY.

• The annual general meeting of subscribers to the above institution was held night, Mr Kenny in the chair. The following reports and balance-sheet . were read and adopted :— Committee’s Report, June 30, 1885. The Statement of Assets and Liabilities isalwaya looked upon with interest, because by it a truer index of the work of your Com-1 “ mittee is to be seen than what ordinarily up-I pears in the balance-sheet. The balance-I sheet is a record of the past, but our liabilities] are things which are yet to be grappled with,l and, I hope, overthrown. At first sight onrl * liabilities would appear to be heavy, but sividl is not really the ease. Last year we debt of £64, this year it is £B2; but the “ books, £32,” must be looked upon as sto. ■ in-trade, or money invested at good percer ■ age, for without such the revenue woiuß suffer, and our liabilities would therefore cer-M tarnly diminish. Apart from the outlay] on the books, our liabilities would be £5O 12sl 6d, four-thirds of which is due on old] accounts for furniture and matters which! your Committee were bound to launch out ini t when first establishing ourselves here, and! which outlay is gradually though surely being! dissipated. The remainder of our debts are! current accounts, which in due time will be! liquidated out of the ordinary revenue. I am! | justified in stating to you that I] " -Außtonsider the institution, generally speaking,! in-« healthy state, in fact in a much better! position than it has ever stood in before. In! the matter of the subscriptions outstanding,! the Librarian is instructed to call these up at] every favorable opportunity, and which will I in due course come in. Assets.

Treasurer’s Report and Balancesheet. June 30, 1885. Mr Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen,—l have much pleasure in submitting to you I w as your treasurer my eighth annual Ballance sheet and statement. I may remark that ■ our revenue this year does not equal the last K by about £2O, and our expenditure has of I necessity been correspondingly less. The reason of the difference is on account cf a larger subsidy being last year received from the Government equal to the amount of the difference. I state this in order to assure you that there is no falling off in public sup-1 port, and though our revenue does not show any increase this year our position is improved to take the field for the next. It will be seen by the receipts from public entertainments being nearly £4O. that your committee have not been idle, but hare been a’ive to the necessity for working, which is an imperative in an institution of this kind. In matter of expenditure i. i : to date have been met, and in two instances two arrears cf accounts to the extent cf £l6 15s. have been paid off, and the credit of the institution remains at par,

The following officers were elected for the ensuing year President, Mr DeLautour; Vice-President, Mr J. Bourke; Committee, Messrs. Featon, Sigley, E. K. Brown, Finneran, and Edwin Brown. Auditors, W. A. O’Meara and J. Warren. Votes of thanks to the outgoing Committee and Chairman terminated the meeting.
