RISING RIVERS

SERIOUS FLOOD THREATS PRECAUTIONS IN VICTORIA SETTLERS LEAVE HOMES AID OF BOATS NECESSARY (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. July 1, 9 a.m.) MELBOURNE. July 1. Throughout north-east Victoria, precautions were being taken yesterday to meet threats of serious floods.

Thousands of acres of land were already covered by the floodwaters of the Ovens and King Rivers. Roads were blocked and many settlers were c< mpelled to leave their homes, using boats. At Wangaratta, the police took 14 people from Hooded homes on the banks of the King River.

Though the rain ceased last evening, more is expected. The Goulburn River was still rising and a great quantity of water has yet to come :from its .tributaries.--

From Corryong to the Hume Dam, miles of land on each side of the river Murray were deeply flooded.

It is anticipated that if further rain comes, Wangaratta town, much of which is low-lying, may experience one of the worst floods in its history. Some homes were last evening flooded to a depth of 4ft and the market, parks and sports areas were inundated. .
