Makaraka-Matawhero Garden Circle

The monthly meeting .of the Makaraka-Matawhero Garden Circle was held in the Makar aka Hall on Tuesday, Mrs. Moore presiding.

There (was a small attendance owing to sickness and the sympathy of the members was extended to all who. were sick. Members wished the secretary a speedy recovery. Mrs. Dar'ton gave very interesting papers on “Looking Through Seed Catalogues” and “Gladioli Culture.” Hints were giyen on ‘how to manure certain, plants. ’ Cuttings of roses and carnations were distributed among members.

The competitions resulted. —Vase of flowers: Mrs. Moore. 1. Gentleman’s buttonhole: Mrs. Mclntosh, Mrs. Livingston and Miss Jackson, equal, 1; Miss Jackson and Mrs. Weaste'll, equal, 4; Miss O’Connell, 5. A dainty 'afternoon tea was served by' the hostess, Mrs. Weastall, and the convener moved a hearty vote of th'anks to Mrs. Darton. Mah-Jong Party

On Wednesday night, Mrs. L. C. Parker entertained a number of friends in a delightful manner at her home in Rutene road.

Mah-jong tables were arranged in the drawing-room, which looked very inviting with its decorations of late roses and richly-tinted marigolds, a •large fire completing the atmosphere of charm.

Supper was served in the diningroom, a posy bowl of autumn-tinted flowers being used with artistic effect in the adornment of the table.

'The hostess wore a simply-cut frock of black ring velvet. ,

Among the guests were Mesdames A. M. Welham. T. A. N. Corson, V. S. Caulton, W. Langlands, W. D. Morley, H. D. Chriap, M. G. Dobson, T. Mitchell, J. Oman, and T. J. Caesar, and 1 Miss L. Bain.
