OBITUARY

OLD WAIROA RESIDENT MR. J. K SMYTH (Special to tltu lloralri.) WAIROA,. this day. The death occurred in the Wairoa Hospital on Wednesday afternoon oi Mr. James Eraser Smyth, aged 75 years, a highly respected and wellknown resident of the-district. Mr. Smyth had spent nearly the whole of his life in the district, engaged in business and stock work. He was born in the military camp at Pifketapu, Hawke'.s Bay, where his father, Sergeant -(Major J. H. Smyth, was attached to a company under Colonel Eraser in the operations against the Hmihaus. Mr. Smyth was engaged in stockbuying and droving and in 1005 he purchased the property of Wahanui, which in 11936 on retiring lie handed over to his sons, and • resided in town.

Mr. Smyth married the eldest daughter, Violet, of the late Mr. and Mrs. B. Glass. Putere. there being six sons —Messrs. .James, Fraser and Norman Smyth, Wahanui, Mr. .Robert Smyth, IW-airoa, Mr. Ewlan Smyth, Mohaka, and Mr. Gordon Smyth, re Puia. A sister, Mrs. A. Dawson, and brother. Mr. R. Smyth, are residents of the town. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon at the Wairoa cemetery, the services being conducted by the Rev. N. 11, Finch.
