King and Queen of Movies
“jHYRONE Power and Jeanette Ma> Dtnald have been proclaimed king and queen of the movies for 1939 in a poll conducted by 70 daily newspapers in the United States. Jeanette’s choice was a surprise to Hollywood. Her last picture, which showed her real beauty in natural colours, helped her a great deal. Clark Gable and Sonja< Henie finished in second place, and Spencer Tracy rind Myrna Loy finished third. Gabie and Myrna Loy wen last year’s poll. It seems strange that Jeanette MacDonald won this public poll, yet was unplaced in the first 10 in the exhibitors’ boxoffice poll. Hollywood tastes in movie stars differ a great deal from the rest of America. In the king and queen poll the Hollywood fans voted for Gable, Tracy, Colman, Nelson Eddy. Gary Cooper, Tyrone Power, Paul Muni, in that order, for the king section.
In the queen section the order was Bette Davis, Jeanette MacDonald, Margaret Sullavan, Myrna Loy, Greta Garbo, Carole Lombard, Claudette Colbert, Norma Shearer, and Shirley Temple.
