JUNIOR NAVAL OFFICERS
INCREASING NUMBERS BRITISH FLEET GROWS LONDON, March 12. To provide additional junior officers for the rapidly expanding fleet, the admiralty has decided to obtain substantial numbers of lieutenants from four additional sources apart from the three ordinary channels—namely, Dartmouth, direct entry from the public schools; and the promotion of promising young seamen. The additional sources are:—(l) Young merchant service officers, of whom 250 already were admitted in the last two years: (2) probably 50 warrant officers v/ill be promoted to lieutenants; (3) three years’ employment will be offered to select officers of the Royal Naval Volunteers’ Reserve; (4) retired officers will be invited to return to occupy shore appointments. The Times points out in a leading article that it takes ■ three years to build a battleship, but eight years to produce a lieutenant by normal methods.
