FEAT IN BACKSTROKE SPRINT CHAMPION BEATEN (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. In an attempt to lower the New Zealand swimming record for the 100yds. backstroke, the Christchurch swimmer, C. Cliff, registered lmin. 5 3-ssec„ breaking the time established by P. G. Mathieson, of Auckland, by three-fifths of a second. An invitation 100yds. scratch free style race was won by P. Hanam, of Auckland, who defeated the New Zealand sprint champion, R. Hatchwell, of Wellington, by a yard in 54 3-ssec.
