TYRE MANUFACTURE

ATTITUDE OP FARMERS "RESTRICTION NOT WANTED Emphasising that it had no objection to the establishment of an industry for the manufacture of motor car and other tyres in New Zealand, the Southern Hawke’s Bay provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union, at a meeting in Dannevirke, indicated that it would oppose any interference with the present unrestricted entry of tyres from the factories of the world. It would also oppose any increase in duties or other interference with the freedom of trade which might have a tendency to increase tyre prices or restrict the freedom of Ihe user io choose the type of tyre most suited to nis requirements. Canterbury Decision “We have got to pay through the nose for everything that is manufactured in New Zealand.” said the chairman, Mr. 1. L. M. Coop, at the meeting if the North Canterbury executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, when a circular from the Dominion headquarters on the proposal to issue licenses for the manufacture of motor tyres in New Zealand was received. Mr. Coop said that* imported motor lyres in New Zealand were cheap ana extremely good, and he doubted whehcr locally-made tyres could compete .n either respect. It was decided to ask the bureau not ,o grant any licenses which would involve a monopoly for the manufacture if tyres, a restriction on their free importation, or an increase in then’ cost directly or indirectly to the user.
