DEATH OF CONSTABLE

YOUNG MAN CHARGED INFLICTION OF WOUNDS (Reed. March 23, 9 a.m.) SYDNEY', March 22. At the inquest into the death of Constable Lionel George Guise, aged 22, single, the coroner found that he died of wounds feloniously inflicted by Leslie William Murphy, aged 24, who was committed for trial on that charge. The charges of murder preferred against Murphy and Stanley Daymcnl, aged 28, were withdrawn.

A message dispatched from Sydney oil February 27 stated that after a •desperate struggle with one of two suspects at Newtown, Constable Lionel George Guise, aged 22, single, was shot in the abdomen and died several hours later in hospital. It was believed that Constable Guise was shot with his own revolver, and also that a suspect was wounded, probably in a hand. A large party of police surrounded a house in the suburb of Paddington and arrested two young men. One had a wounded hand. Leslie William Murphy, aged 24, and Stanley Daymen!, aged 28, were charged later with having murdered Constable Guise. Both were further charged with breaking and entering, and each was charged separately with being found at night with housebreaking implements in his possession.
