EQUALITY OF WOMEN

The application of practical socialism to the needs of the human individual was discussed by Mr. T. C. McGillick, Adelaide, at a meeting of 50tJ* UisiDorhe people held in the City Hail on Sunday evening. ■ Mr. McGillick described in particular the Soviet's attitude towards the 1 engagement of women in professions and industry, declaring that they received the same rights and accepted the -same:,w<sK:aS-men, being paid in proportion to the importance and volume of the work they were doing. The Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, MJP., took the chair, and briefly introduced the speaker. There was- "no country which better! represented the socialist principle, "from each according to his labour; to each according to his w&rk," than Russia, said Mr. McGillick. All citizens were expected to work, and it had been found that in many instances women working beside men Lad earned wages in excess of those earned by the men. Women were not obliged to confine their efforts to home-making, if they desired to enter professions or industries, and their payment was according to the type of work they undertook, and the skill with which they performed it. Social services were an integral part of the system under the Soviet, the speaker explained, and free dental service, medical and hospital attention was joined to free education, free technital training, and paid holidays in all branches of industry. Maximum rentals were restricted to 10 per cent of the workers' earnings. . At the end of an interesting address, which included reference to the international situation, among other topics, Mr. McGillick answered many questions. He was accorded a vote of thanks, on the motion of Mr. Ed. Lindiey.
