BUTCHERS' AWARD

HIGHER WAGES CLAIM CONCILIATION OOUNCIL A sitting of the Conciliation Council opened in Gisborne this morning, with Mr. R. E. Price as conciliation commissioner, to consider claims and counter-proposals in respect of the award covering shop butchers in Gisborne. The employees, who were represented by Messrs. W. E. Sill, L. H. Bissendeu, and V. Nossiter, claimed increases in pay and some variations of the conditions laid down in the award now on the point of expiration. The employers, represented by Messrs. T. Smellie. F. Forshaw, and E. A. Ev'ans, offered counter-proposals which sought variations fen the standing conditions, directed to an easing of the working problems of the operators, and based their wages offers mainly upon the old award.
