BOXING SEASON
OPENING IN GISBORNE KELLY-COLLINS BOUT To mark the opening of the 1939 boxing season, the Gisborne Boxing Association has arranged to match Percy Kelly, Auckland, with the former lightweight amateur champion, Joe Collins, in a professional match ion April 20. Percy Kelly has fought previously in Gisborne, having been matched with Brian McKay, Hawke's Bay, during last season, McKay securing the verdict on points. Collins was one of the New Zealand representatives a'; the Empire Games last year, having won the lightweight title at the 1937 national championships. He has had one professional fight already, and scored a v : .n over a tough opponent. As a preliminary to the season's major activities, an amateur tournament, comprising a few selected bouts, will be held in the association's rooms on March 29, when the executive will tender a presentation to Mr. A. S Parker, who vacates the post of president on his removal from the district at the end of the month.
