FIGHT FOR RUNS

AUCKLAND FOLLOWS ON NINTH WIOKET STAND GOOD ENGLISH ATTACK SOUND FIELDING (Ter Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. The cricket .match between Sir Julien Cabh's team and. Auckland was resumed this morning in hot. windless weather. Auckland continued its first innings with eight wickets down for 175 against the visitors' slow bowlers, Smith and Walsh. Mathesoni opened brightly and got seven off Walsh's opening over. Both the English bowlers quickly got the length and steadied' the batting. Walsh, with a .combination of flight, spin and immaculate length, became difficult to play. Pearson, who was 33 not out, also began confidently. Runs came quickly, Matheson swinging Walsh high to the leg fence to send 200 up. The English fielding was crisp and keen, the batsmen finding it hard to get the ball away. Both bowlers developed great accuracy and the batsmen setltled down to play them on their merits. Wailsb was flighting the ball well and .turning both ways enough to beat the bat. To add to the discomfiture of the batsmen, he was occasionally keeping very low. Wiith the score at 215, Jackson replaced Smith, and Pearson cut him behind point to reach 50. It was much better batting than bad marked the Auckland venture on Saturday, with a spirit of enterprise that, had previously been lacking. Watt's was the next bowler tried and Matheson lifted him hard and straight for four, Maxwell missing the next ball for four byes. The Auckland pair were now showing great .confidence and resolutely attacked .the bowling. A double change was made by bringing Phillipson on at the other end. Both bowlers were .lifting and the batsmen settled down to steady the new line of attack. The English ground fielding was clean and the returns on the full to Harper were an object lesson. Matheson finally hit out at Smith and was clean bowled. The partnership had put on 88 runs. Burke was the next batsman, the slow bowlers now again carrying the adtaek. Auckland was now fighting hard to save the follow-on. At 270 Smith ibeat Pearson with a spinning ball and Cowie, without scoring, was leg before Ho Smith's next ball. The Auckland innings closed at 270. Auckland followed on, Postles and Whitelaw opening to the bowling of Phillipson and Watte. Whitelaw scored a two and Postles a single and with three runs on the lunch adjournment came.
