UNIQUE BRIDGE
TRESTLE 3600 FT. LONG ROAD RAISED ABOVE FLOOD The largest undertaking of its kind in the,Dominion, and unique in thai it fcreally a bridge .'over, dry land, the Whirokino trestle bridge, erected to ensure freedom from blockage occasioned by flood-water on the main Wellington to Auckland Highway just south of Foxton, will be opened for traffic this week. This will mean that the last step will have been accomplished in-making the whole of this North Island highway an all-weather route The trestle, which will take the road above the level of the highest flood within tiie memory of the oldest inhabitants, is 3600 ft. in length, and a short '• distance away, but part of the same scheme, is a .smaller length of 120 f- The work was commenced in July, 1937, and has been in progress eyer since without any major delays. The old road over the peat swamp will be retained as a stock route to prevent the delays occurring on the long length of trestle. The work has attracted considerable interest in the Dominion and overseas among highway engineers.
