ASSAULTED A WOMAN

MAN FINED IN WAIROA BEHAVIOUR WHILE DRUNK (Spociul to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. , Charged with assaulting Florence Irene Williamson. John Joseph Nelson, aged 40, of Tuai, was fined £5, in delimit one mouth's imprisonment, when he appeared in the Wairoa Police Court on Saturday before Messrs. J. Gorki 11 and H. A. Bygum, J.Ps. The accused was convicted and discharged for behaving in a disorderly manner while drunk. He pleaded guilty. Outlining the case. Constable J. McAlpine stated that the accused cam;; to town on Friday and had more drinu than was good for him. He asked for a bed and Williamson, the licensee of the hotel, booked him in as a boarder. The accused then became noisy and was told by the licensee that if he did not behave himself he would have to go. The accused became antagonistic and Williamson threatened to ring the police. He went to the office with this purpose in view rind the accused attempted to follow him, Mrs. Williamson endeavoured to stop him ana the accused grabbed her and attempted to drag her away from the door. It took three men to break his hold. Appearing for the accused, Mr. G. O. K. Sainsbury said he remembered very little about the affair and th-e accused felt the matter very keenly that he had been charged with assault on a woman. Counsel for the accused suggested that the evidence of the assault should be gone into so that the court caul I be appraised of the degree of assault The police did not say that the assault was serious, or that it was a brutal assault, bill that besides catching hold of Mrs. Williamson's wrist the accused also smacked her on the face with his open hand. The Bench told the recused that the charge vvas a very serious one. if.vA that lie was liable to a fine of £lO. or two months' imprisonment. lie could nol go about doing that sort of thing.
