CRICKET REP. TRIAL

WIN FOR CHAMPIONS REST TEAM ROUTED GOOD SCORE BY G.H.5.0.8. Winners of the senior A grade championship a week previously, G.H.5.0.8. scored an easy win over a team representing the rest of the district clubs, the Old Students having a winning majority of over two hundred in a week-end game at the Oval. The champions had first use of the wicket and gave a display in marked contrast to that given in the championship final, their 289 runs taking until the afternoon tea adjournment to make A splendid 88 by J. Barbour was a feature of this innings, Barbour showing some fine shots in reaching this tally. Sim batted well to make 52, while Wells, one of the opening pair, made a solid 43. Thompson, 26, and Porter, 25, also batted well the latter securing a five and four fours. O’Brien was stock bowler for The Rest and sent down 17 overs to secure two wickets for 52 runs. Newton, the slow bowler, took two wickets for 44 rung with the rest of the wickets well divided. Eight bowlers were tried by The Rest and only one failed to secure a wicket. Taking their strike, The Rest failed badly and were all out for 71, including 16 by “Mr. Extras.” Purcell, who opened the innings with Fisher, topscored for his side with an invaluable and steadily played 20. Somerville, with 19, was the only other double-figure scorer. Thompson and Slade were the destroying agents for G.H.5.0.8., the former taking four wickets for 15 runs and the latter three for eight. Six bowlers were tried and all proved dangerous to The Rest batsmen, although the wickets were shared by only three men. The game was a representative trial match. Scores: — G.H.5.0.8.
