PROPOSED BOARDS

HANDLING OF CARGOES NO PRODUCERS' MEMBER WAIROA FARMERS ANXIOUS (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. Reference to the fact that the proposals to set up boards in the various ports in New Zealand in an endeavour to bring about a more satisfactory state of affairs so far as the handling of cargoes is concerned do not provide for representation by the producers was made at the annual meeting of the Wairoa branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union on Saturday afternoon, when it was decided to ascertain the reasons for the omission. The question was raised toy the president, Mr. A. T. Carroll, who stated that it seemed strange that no provision had been made for a representative of the producers on the committees. The suggestion was that the committees should provide for two representatives of the waterside workers and two shipping representatives, with an independent chairman.

In his opinion, it would be best for the union to move carefully and before expressing any definite opinion endeavour to find out the reason for the omission. No time should be lost in making inquiries, however, as it might be imperative to act quickly. On the motion of Mr. P. J. O'Kane, seconded by Mr. T. leC. Powdrell, it was decided that the secretary should be instructed to write to the Dominion headquarters inquiring if the union, the Dairy Board and the Meat Board were represented at the conference held recently to discuss the waterside problem and if not why not.
