H.B. BOARD MEETING MANUAL TRAINING PUPILS DENTAL CLINIC CLAIMS Numerous topics of interest to householders in the various school areas in Poverty Bay were discussed at the monthly meeting of the Hawke's Bay Education Board, held in Napier. The Department of Education advised the Minister's approval for the appointment of an additional assistant at Te Hapara School. 'ln connection with the transport of Manutuke pupils to the manual training centre at Gisborne, the board agreed to submit to the department a tender at £2 per return trip. The department inquired whether any change had occurred in the circumstances at Makaraka, since the ' board had last reported on the provision of a house for the head teacher there. The school committee had urged the need for this provision, mainly on the ground that the heal teacher cycled four miles to schooi daily. The board felt that no change had occurred. Information was received from the department that a grant had been an-' proved for remodelling and extension at Tuai School, in accordance with the board's application. The Public Works Department is to submit an estimate for erecting a two-roorn school at Piripaua, at No. 2 camp. Mr. E. H. Baker and the architect were instructed to report to "next meeting on the need for additions to Waerenga-o-kuri School. Dental Service In reference to a request from the Opoutama School Committee for dental service to the pupils, the board recommended the committee to proceed with the collection of funds for a clinic room, as travelling dental clinics were not favoured by the department. The application of a married teacher in one of the larger schools of the district, for permission for her four-year-old son to attend the school, was declined. The chairman was authorised to vis! the Waerenga-a-hika and Waipao i areas, to discuss with householders the consolidation of the schools there. Variation of the hours laid down for religious instruction in schools, to meet the local conditions of attendance by a clergyman, was sought by the Matawai School Committee. The board decided that it had no power to grant the variation asked for. Permission was granted to the Gisborne combined district committee, Presbyterian Bible classes, to use the Patutahi School in connection with a young women's camp to be held at Easter. The board agreed to apply to the department for a grant to reform the site of the old infant school at Gisborne Central, and pave the area in bitumen. A number cf minor applications for improvements in school buildings and play areas ,and in teachers' accommodation, were referred to the board's architect for reports.
