DAVIS CUP TEAM

LIKELY AUSTRALIAN SIDE NOT EASY TO SELECT The one thing obvious about the 1939 Davis Cup squad is that in singles and doubles we will have to rely on John. Bromwich and Adrian Quist, says a writer in a Melbourne paper. Any other members of the team can be viewed at this distance as emergencies. But. those emergencies will not be easy to select. It would seem to me that, last year’s four should go—Bromwich, Quist, Hopman (manager) and Schwartz, with Vivian McGrath as fifth member. McGrath could devote his time to working up his singles game. His experienced in Davis Cup matches should be inavluable for this role. The possibilities of McGrath recovering his best form are not nearly fully explored. His form was not very convincing in the Australian championships, but lie might be just short of a hard match or two. His age, 23, is decidedly in his favour. In Schwartz and Iloptnan we would have the second best doubles combination in the world. That ranking is acknowledged overseas. Neither Hopman nor Schwartz played within points of himself in the Australian championships. Both were obviously stale and just could -not raise their best tennis. However, they have helped to make every- Australian tournament this season.
