EXCITING CRICKET

ONE-DAY TEST MATCH SLENDER N.Z. MARGIN TOURISTS’ RACE FOR RUNS CROWD DELIGHTED (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Five thousand spectators at Basin Reserve yesterday enjoyed a day’s exciting cricket in the match between Sir Julicn Calm’s team and the New Zealand XI, which was confined to one day’s play through rain having prevented a ball being bowled on Friday or Saturday. Yesterday was A perfect day, there being such brilliant sunshine that many of the spectators on benches viewed the play in their shirt sleeves. The ground was in splendid order, but the ball was inclined to hang upon the pitch instead of coming through to the bat. This made free scoring difficult. New Zealand had first use of the wicket and, thanks to the bright batting lay the colt J. A. Onglcy and resolute knocks bv W. M. Wallace and W. N. Carson, both of whom were undefeated, D. A. R. Moloney, captain of the New Zealand side, was able sportingly to declare the innings closed at 2.50 pan.

J: E. Walsh, the Australian, was the best of the English bowlers, securing four wickets i'or 07 runs oft' 20 overs with his slow leg breaks. Though the Englishmen had plenty of time to get the runs, Cowie, Ashenden and Pritchard kept so good a length that runs came slowly and, when slumps were drawn at 6 o'clock, Sir Julien Calm's team were still seven runs short of the New Zealand total, the board showing 163 on for the loss of seven wickets. A good stand by N. Oldfield and F, A. Watts, which added 03 for the sixth vicket, came close to giving the Englishmen victory. The race for runs ' by the visitors was highly enjoyed by ' the big crowd, who contributed £220 nt the gales, interest being sustained right up to the last ball. Among those who attended the match was the Governor-General, Lord Galway, who was introduced to members of both teams after the tea interval, and Sir Harry Batterbee, High Commissioner for Great Britain in New Zealand. Members of Sir Julien Calm's team left by the Limited express last night foi Rotorua, where they will play a one-day match on Wednesday. Scores:— NEW ZEALAND First innings P. E.
