LOCKED HIMSELF IN

MAN IN HOTEL BEDROOM DOOR. HAD TO BE BROKEN (Special to tha Hurald.) WAIROA, this day. The story of how a young man the worse ofl' for liquor entered a bedroom of the Ferry Hotel on Saturday and locked himself in, making it necessary to break the door down to get him out again, was told in the Wairoa Police Court yesterday, when Vincent O'Shea, aged 22, an Australian, appeared before Messrs. J. Corlull and O. A. Johnson, J.P.s to answer a charge of having been found on enclosed premises in circumstances that did not disclose the commission of or intention to commit any other offence, and also a second offence for drunkenness. He pleaded guilty to both charges. Constable .). McAlpine said that last Saturday a barman at the Ferry Hotel saw a man knocking on the door of one of the bedrooms, and when asked what he wanted he said that a man had gone into the room. The barman tried the door and found that it was locked, and as he could get no reply to his knocking, the door was broken in and the accused was found inside. The accused had no right to be in the room, added Constable McAlpine. He was drunk and just before this incident he had been refused more liquor because of his condition. He was boarding just across the road from the hotel, and if he wanted to "sleep it off" he could have gone to his own room, which was scarcely any farther away. Some articles were missing from the room, but it was not suggested that accused was responsible for that. The accused told the bench that he was being pestered by two Maoris for drink and that he had gone to the room for protection.

The Bench pointed out to the accused that lie was liable to three months' imprisonment or a fine of £lO. However, it was of the opinion that the accused had not gone to the room for the purpose of committing any offence and he would be leniently dealt with.

On the drunkenness charge he was lined £l, in default 48 hours' imprisonment, and on the other count he was fined £2, in default seven days' gaol.
