SENIOR A GRADE

SPORTING CHANCE ! 136 RUNS IN 70 MINUTES EX-STUDENTS BEAT MARIST Aiming at an outright win, Marist 'went down to outright defeat at the hands of G.H.5.0.8., in the senior A grade match which actually decided the premiership for the season. In the first innings, Marist made 230, and then dismissed their opponents for a total of 142. They went in again and registered a score of 47 runs for two wickets, and declared their innings with a lead of 135 runs, there being then an hour and 10 minutes left. G.'H.5.0.8. opened their second innings with Slade and Wells, and they put on 35 for the first wicket, Wells going out to a straight ball at which he hit hugely. Joined by Thomson, Slade went on and on, hitting everything that came his way, and rapidly driving the score up until, at 109, he was caught by Purcell off James. The exstudents were in higli fettle, and not only were they scoring freely off all loose balls, but their running between the wickets was a delight to the spectators. Thomson made 35, and Cederwall and Barbour, who were equally enterprising, carried the score on to the necessary total for a win, G.H.5.0.8. winning with six wickets and a handful of minutes to spare. It was one of the finest efforts seen for many seasons, and the scoring rate, aver-, aging more than two runs per minute, indicates the liveliness of the final innings.

Slade was the batting success of the winning side, for he made 42 in the first innings, and GO in the second, both knocks being invaluable to his side. Wells, 15 and 13, contributed more than the score would indicate to the success of his team, and Thomson, 12 and 35, helped materially to secure the win.

In the first G.H.5.0.8. innings, E. James took six wickets for 70 runs, and M. Sharp two for 22. Wells took both the Marist wickets which fell in the second innings, and James took three for 54 in the ex-students' second turn at the wicket. Details:— MARIST First innings 230 Second Innings E. NO TIME TO SPARE CITY BEAT OLD BOYS TWO WICKETS IN HAND The City senior A team had to work hard for success in their match against Old Boys, their lead on the first innings having little value considering the championship .situation. On the first day of the match, Old Boys had scored 178 runs, and on Saturday City completed their first innings for 193, Old Boys then put up a good performance under the prevailing conditions, registering 148 ill a brisk second innings Newton's 54 and Fisher's 39 'being the outstanding performances. , Needing 128 runs to win outright.

City were cautious in opening their innings, but quickly livened up, and their rate of scoring for the greater part of the innings was equal to that of G.H.5.0.8. in the other A grade match. They got the runs required with very little time to spare. Details:— OLD BOYS First Innings 178 Second. Innings A. Fisher, c McLean, b Winter 39 G. Loclcett, lbw., b Dow .. .. 3 M.
