MARRED BY RAIN

P. COX'S MARATHON Wet weather on Saturday 'was responsible for the cancellation of the Gisborne Sports Club's fixture on the Victoria Domain. The programme was to have been staged on Thursday night, when rain interfered, and on Saturday afternoon the weather conditions again' proved unfavourable.

The club now has in hand arrangements for its annual championship meeting, which will be held on the Domain next Saturday.

Before the rain set in on Saturday, F Cox, one of the club's best distance runners, commenced his 12-mile marathon, in an attempt to break the record established recently for that distance by 11. J. McLeod, anothei prominent local runner. Cox made a most creditable effort, but did not succeed in bettering his club-mates time. He carried on despite the rain, which started part way through his run, and completed the distance in lhr. 14min. Msec, just 52sec. short of McLeod's record. This was Cox s first attempt, at such a long rim, and at the finish he was warmly congratulated on his performance.
